Chapter Thirteen
The restaurant deck at Glass Bay had been built especially for enjoying sunny island days like this one. The deck itself extended out from the dining room of the pub and was twice the square footage of the inside of the pub. It was built on pilings that were driven down into the rocky shore, and at high tide the ocean came up under the deck and made lovely, swooshy wave noises for the customers. Scattered around the deck were beautiful slatted wooden tables, with matching folding chairs with blue and white striped cushions. Large umbrellas rose above each table providing shade for those less inclined to be roasted like a raisin in the sun. Extending out from the middle of the far side of the deck was a long sloped walkway that led down to the docks where the boats were moored.
As Sugar and Clive came down the hill from the road, they could see and hear gulls wheeling and crying above the marina docks, the occasional poop-missile landing with a splat on the water or the wooden dock. They went down the steep slope on the gravel path between a general store and a cabin tucked behind the pub, and made their way around the pub and onto the deck via the wooden walkway at the side of the building.
Clive landed on the wide railing and Sugar paused as they looked for Larry the seagull. Their heads swiveled back and forth, almost in synch, scanning the beach below the pub, the docks, the deck and the sky above.
"There he is," Clive said.
"Where?"
"Down under the dock there, at the shoreline. Near that little blue dingy."
Sugar looked to where Clive was pointing with one wing and saw their dubious target. Larry was standing with one webbed foot ankle-deep in the waves that lapped the shore. The other foot was holding down an aluminum can that was trying to drift away on the tide. Every few seconds when the tide rolled back a bit and the weight of Larry's big, flat foot pressed it into the wet sand, the bird bent forward and tried to stick his long beak into the hole at the top of the can. At its widest, the gull's beak was twice as wide as the pop can opening. There was no way he would ever get his beak into the can. But that didn't stop him from trying.
Sugar looked up at Clive on the railing and sighed. "Well," she said, "let's give it a try. Sadly, I think he's our best hope."
When the pair arrived at Larry's side he was losing control of the pop can. The tide was coming in, making the water around Larry's feet deeper and each time a little wave rolled under him, his grip on the can became less certain.
"Hi Larry," Sugar said.
"Not now," the big bird said, "I'm busy."
Sugar parked her butt in the sand a couple of feet up the tide line from Larry. "You don't even know what we've come to ask yet.
